This is one of the themes of our summer series “Second Wind: A New Life for Monuments.” As part of this series, we visited the chateau in Nemilkov in the Klatovy region. When driving through the Czech countryside, we often see chateaus and fortresses in the villages. Some are still in a dilapidated state, but others are receiving well-deserved care after decades of neglect. From 1962 until his death, the significant Czech historian and preservationist Václav Mencl (January 16, 1905 – July 28, 1978) lived with his wife Dobroslava (January 2, 1904 – November 19, 1978) at the Nemilkov Chateau during the summer. He was an outstanding architectural historian, an art history expert, a graduate engineer from the Czech Technical University, a Doctor of Philosophy, the director of the State Heritage Institute (Státní památkový ústav), and primarily the author of dozens of expert articles and publications....

Restoration of the Dance Hall Begins

Currently, an extensive restoration of the baroque dance hall is underway, during which restorers are uncovering the original roses hidden beneath later layers of paint. This restoration process would not be possible without the support of our friends, supporters, and benefactors. Everyone who contributed to the reconstruction will have their own rose in the hall. Join the enthusiasts who have their own decoration in the castle’s representative room. Such an opportunity may not come again....

Competition of History Magazine

We have joined a competition organized by the magazine History Revue. You can visit five different landmarks that their current owners are restoring and are opened to the public during this summer season. You can also have a chance to “win something.” The grand prize is 30,000 CZK! The landmarks include Nemilkov Castle, the Church of St. Giles in Libyně, the windmill in Klobouky u Brna, the Pačinek Glassworks, the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross in Kunratice u Cvikova, and Stránov Castle....
